“We Can’t Go Like This” – Broos
Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has admitted his side still harbors significant weaknesses following a disappointing two-match friendly series against Panama.
South Africa played to a 1-1 draw at Moses Mabhida Stadium last Friday before suffering a 2-1 defeat at DHL Stadium on Tuesday, marking the first home loss of the Broos era since his appointment in May 2021.
Reflecting on the performances, the Belgian tactician emphasized that while the results were secondary to squad evaluation, the gap between their current form and World Cup standards is clear.
“I know there are weaknesses in this team,” Broos stated. “We cannot go to the World Cup at our current level; we need more. However, we can work on that. Over the next two months, we may identify other players who can make us stronger.”
Broos noted that the primary objective wasn’t to emerge from these friendlies “World Cup ready,” but to identify the tactical profile needed for June. A major concern was the team’s defensive lapses, having conceded first in both fixtures.
“We conceded twice on Tuesday from set pieces,” Broos added. “Everyone knows their responsibilities during dead-ball situations. With the changes we made, there was some disorganization, but we also struggled with physical strength and height. We were a smaller team on Tuesday, and that was a disadvantage.”
Despite the defeat, Broos remained positive about the tactical exposure. “It wasn’t about winning; it was about giving players experience against a non-African opponent. Panama plays with different tactics, making these games incredibly valuable.”
The 2024 AFCON bronze medalists face a daunting Group A alongside South Korea, Czechia, and co-hosts Mexico. Bafana Bafana opens their campaign against Mexico on 11 June, a fixture that will serve as the ultimate litmus test for the team’s progress.
