Webber Opens Up On USA Move

Bafana Bafana midfielder Jamie Webber has opened up on his move to the USL Championship outfit FC Tulsa in a groundbreaking transfer that marked a significant milestone in both the club’s and the league’s history.
The USA second division side broke the bank to lure Webber away from Betway Premiership club Sekhukhune United, making him the most valuable player in the USL Championship with a valuation of €1 million (R21.4 million) as reported by the club.
However, before completing the switch, the South African international had a tough second season at Babina Noko as he fell down the pecking order of then-head coach Lehlohonolo Seema, making no appearance in the ongoing campaign.
The 27-year-old dynamic midfielder, who scored a stunner against Egypt in the first leg of the CHAN qualifiers in Bloemfontein last month, welcomed the opportunity for a fresh start abroad as it aligned with his ambitions to ply his trade overseas.
“Since I was a child, I wanted to move abroad, and that was my main goal since I started playing football, and this was the first opportunity that I got, and I had to grab it with both hands,” Webber told the club’s media team.
“What excites me the most is different environments, different people, different challenges that come with football, so I love a challenge. The league is different from what I played in, I’m excited to see what comes with it.
“When I heard about the interest, I looked into it, and I saw that the club has a small history, and I would like to grow with the club, and I would like to win things with the club. So, that definitely caught my interest.”
Webber says he aims to make his presence felt with goal contributions to help the team, founded in 2015, elevate its status in American football as he set his sights on winning a league title in a foreign land.
“My personal goals would probably be to score more goals and create more goals, that’s always been a personal goal of mine. And for the club to win the league, there’s no doubt about that – I really want to win the league,” he added.
“It’s my first time out of Africa; it’s a different experience, but I do want to win things, and I’m hoping we can.”
Webber, who lifted the MTN8 trophy with SuperSport United in the 2019/20 season, made his Tulsa debut on 20 April as the Oklahoma-based outfit thumped Las Vegas Lights FC 4-1 to move up to fourth place with 12 points, three behind log leaders New Mexico United after six matches played.
