White Named Fiji Head Coach Ahead Of 2027 Rugby World Cup

Former Springboks coach Jake White has been appointed head coach of Fiji, with the experienced South African set to lead the Flying Fijians into the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia.
The Fiji Rugby Union confirmed White’s appointment on Tuesday, 13 October, bringing an end to a recruitment process that attracted 31 applicants. He replaces interim coach Senirusi Seruvakula, who took charge following Mick Byrne’s departure in April.
White brings a wealth of international experience, having guided South Africa to Rugby World Cup glory in 2007 in France. He also led the Springboks to the 2004 Tri-Nations title and was named World Rugby International Coach of the Year in both 2004 and 2007.
His appointment marks a return to international head coaching for White, whose career has also included extensive experience in club rugby, most notably with the Bulls in South Africa.
The 62-year-old now faces the challenge of translating his experience into success with a Fiji side renowned for its individual skill, attacking flair and ability to trouble the world’s leading rugby nations.
White is known for emphasising forward dominance, set-piece organisation, tactical kicking and structured game plans. His task will be to integrate these elements into Fiji’s natural attacking strengths while building greater consistency against top-tier opposition.
The Flying Fijians reached the quarter-finals of the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France, demonstrating their ability to compete with the best. However, White will have limited time to prepare the squad for the demands of the next global tournament.
Fiji have been drawn in Pool C for the 2027 World Cup, where they will face Argentina, Spain and Canada. The pool-stage campaign will give White an opportunity to implement his coaching philosophy and build a team capable of progressing to the knockout stages.
The appointment also sets up a significant clash with South Africa ahead of the tournament, with Fiji scheduled to face the Springboks in a World Cup warm-up Test in Gosford, Australia, on 18 September 2027.
For White, the challenge will be to combine his World Cup-winning experience with Fiji’s distinctive rugby identity. For the Flying Fijians, his appointment signals an ambitious bid to turn their considerable talent into consistent results on the international stage.
