Will Chiefs Form Guard Of Honour Against Sundowns? Johnson Respond

Kaizer Chiefs coach Cavin Johnson isn’t considering forming a guard of honor for Mamelodi Sundowns, their upcoming opponent in the DStv Premiership at FNB Stadium on Thursday (19:30).

Sundowns have a chance to clinch the league title before their match against Chiefs. Stellenbosch’s result against Golden Arrows in the DStv Premiership match at Danie Craven Stadium on Wednesday will determine this.

The African giants, still reeling from their CAF Champions League semi-final exit to ES Esperance, needs just three points to secure their seventh consecutive league title. Chiefs, on the other hand, haven’t mounted a serious challenge and are set to finish the season empty-handed again.

“There are always those permutations in the back of people’s minds,” admitted Johnson.

“I can tell you honestly, I did not think of that permutation; you just reminded me of it. But if there is that type of permutation in the air, then we will see what we do by the time we get to the game.

“But my focus is entirely on my team and who I play next and how it affects them, it doesn’t bother me at this stage only because we need to be on a good run.”

A Sundowns victory, coupled with favorable results elsewhere, would see them repeat their feat from last season – winning the league with seven games remaining. This would be the earliest a team has clinched the title and their 14th overall, achieved without kicking a ball just like last term after SuperSport United’s draw with Chippa United on 1 April last year.

Chiefs did form a guard of honor for Sundowns in the 2021/22 season when the title was secured four games early during their match, which was round 28 of the season, at FNB Stadium, which ended in a 1-1 draw.
