Williams Says Sundowns Deserved CAF Glory After Years Of Heartbreak

Ronwen Williams believes Mamelodi Sundowns fully deserved to win the CAF Champions League title after years of heartbreak and near misses on the continent.
The Brazilians clinched their second African title after edging Moroccan heavyweights AS FAR 2-1 on aggregate on Sunday. The momentous victory emphatically ends a decade of continental heartbreak and firmly cements Masandawana’s place among the absolute elite of African football.
Redemption, Grit, and Continental Glory
Reflecting on the grueling journey to the pinnacle of African football, the Bafana Bafana shot-stopper paid an emotional tribute to the club’s inner circle and the broader Masandawana family.
“We deserve it. What this team has been through, not only this season but over the last five or six years, knocking on the door every season, playing non-stop, travelling across the continent and not getting over the line,” said Williams.
“To the Sundowns technical staff, the players and the Masandawana family who have been with us through the difficult moments, thank you for the support.”
The 34-year-old goalkeeper anchored the triumph with a masterclass in mental resilience. After conceding a first-half penalty that AS FAR’s Mohamed Himrat converted, Williams achieved ultimate redemption in the second half. The veteran keeper dived heroically to deny Himrat from the spot on his second attempt, preserving Sundowns’ aggregate advantage.
Williams, who walked away with his third career CAF medal, also welcomed the immense pressure that comes with wearing the down-downs shirt.
“We also want to thank the fans for the criticism because we know what we are capable of. We know we are the pillar of South African football. Thank you so much,” he added.
A Decade in the Making
This tactical masterclass marks a profound milestone for the Tshwane giants. Sundowns lifted their maiden Champions League star exactly ten years ago, capturing the 2016 crown under the legendary Pitso Mosimane.
By reclaiming the holy grail of African football, Sundowns have unlocked a massive global itinerary for the upcoming calendar:

The Road Ahead: CAF Super Cup & FIFA Intercontinental Cup
Up first, the newly crowned African kings will battle CAF Confederation Cup winners USM Alger in a highly anticipated one-off CAF Super Cup clash. Both sides have lifted this piece of silverware before—Sundowns defeated TP Mazembe 1-0 in 2017, while the Algerian outfit shocked Al Ahly by the same scoreline in 2023.
Beyond continental boundaries, the Brazilians have punched their ticket to the prestigious 2026 FIFA Intercontinental Cup, joining the champions of Europe, South America, Asia, North America, and Oceania.
Saudi Arabian giants Al Hilal and New Zealand’s Auckland City have already booked their places, with Sundowns scheduled to meet the winner of that opening-round clash. Meanwhile, global football eyes look toward Saturday’s blockbuster UEFA Champions League final between Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal to find out who will complete the elite line-up.
Looking even further ahead, this victory guarantees that the Yellow Nation will return to the expanded FIFA Club World Cup arena in 2029, building directly on the foundation of their highly rated debut appearance in the United States.
