Zwane Pays Tribute To Kaizer Motaung On His Birthday

Arthur Zwane says he is lost for words to express his gratitude to Kaizer Chiefs founder and chairman Kaizer Motaung, who celebrates his 81st birthday on Thursday.

Motaung’s name is not only woven into the fabric of South African football but also stands as a symbol of vision, leadership, and excellence that has shaped both Kaizer Chiefs Football Club and the beautiful game across Africa.

In 1970, at just 25 years old, and with the support of several founding members, Motaung established Kaizer Chiefs — a club that would grow into a cultural institution and a symbol of pride for millions across South Africa, the continent, and the world.

In a statement released on Thursday, the club said: “Kaizer Chiefs became more than a football team. It became a movement — a place where talent meets opportunity, where flair meets discipline, and where dreams are given the space to grow.

“His influence has reached far beyond the borders of South Africa, earning him international recognition and accolades, including the prestigious Order of Ikhamanga and induction into the South African Hall of Fame.”

Zwane, who played for Chiefs between 2000 and 2010, made 252 appearances, scored 32 goals, and won 12 major trophies with the Glamour Boys.

Having served in various roles at the club, Zwane left Chiefs in October last year to join AmaZulu as co-coach. He later took over as head coach in February following the resignation of Vusi Vilakazi.

“I always get goosebumps when I talk about the chairman of Kaizer Chiefs because I am where I am today because of him,” said Zwane.

Zwane, who was appointed as Chiefs’ head coach on a three-year deal in May 2022, was reassigned as assistant coach to Molefi Ntseki at the start of the 2023/24 season, despite finishing fifth in the previous campaign.

Chiefs have not finished in the top eight since Zwane’s stint as head coach. He notably guided the team to the CAF Champions League final in the 2020/21 season following Gavin Hunt’s departure.

Under his leadership, Chiefs became the first South African side to defeat Wydad Casablanca in Morocco during the semifinals.

However, in a surprising move, the club replaced Zwane with Stuart Baxter ahead of the Champions League final. Chiefs went on to lose to Pitso Mosimane’s Al Ahly, a decision still regarded by many as one of the most puzzling in the club’s history.

“I would like to wish him many more years,” added Zwane.

“God must bless him. The game in this country still needs him — he is a visionary who has done so much for South African football.

“I can only say, may God bless him and keep him healthy.”
