Zwane Reaches Half-Century As Youth-Centric AmaZulu Smashes Records At Mabhida

AmaZulu coach Arthur Zwane marked a significant milestone in his 50th match in charge as Usuthu thrashed Chippa United 5–1 at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday.

Notably, Zwane shared co-coaching duties with Vusi Vilakazi in nine of those matches—Vilakazi was in the opposing technical area for Chippa United on this occasion.

Across his 50 games in charge, Zwane has recorded 20 wins, 19 defeats, and 11 draws.

The emphatic victory marked AmaZulu’s first win by such a margin since their 5–1 triumph over Cape Town City at DHL Stadium during the 2020/21 season.

At the time, Usuthu were coached by Benni McCarthy, who guided the club to a second-place finish behind Mamelodi Sundowns—their highest-ever finish.

It was also the first time AmaZulu have won by four goals in a match since their 4–0 win over Kaizer Chiefs during the 2022/23 season at Moses Mabhida Stadium under Romain Folz. Ironically, that Chiefs side was coached by Zwane himself.

This result also marked the first time Zwane has overseen a four-goal victory in his coaching career.

Reacting to the milestone, Zwane said: “Sometimes all you need in the PSL is to win games.

“It’s about collecting points. We also need goals for goal difference because, as you know, we were on zero before this match. Now we are on a positive goal difference, having scored five and conceded one.

“That gives us an advantage. We need to keep scoring and avoid conceding as we approach the end of the season. As I said, it won’t be easy with the remaining fixtures.

“Most of our remaining matches will be here in Durban, except for the one against Orbit College FC in Rustenburg. The Lamontville Golden Arrows game will be tough, as will the matches against Kaizer Chiefs and Durban City FC.”

The visitors opened the scoring through Azola Matrose, who struck a superb long-range effort that looped over goalkeeper Olwethu Mzimela.

AmaZulu responded emphatically, with Athini Maqokolo scoring twice, while Siphamandla Zikhali, Thapelo Matlhoko, and Thabiso Kutumela also found the net.

The victory strengthened Usuthu’s grip on fourth place in the Betway Premiership standings, taking them to 42 points from 26 matches.

They are now 12 points shy of matching the club’s PSL-era record of 54 points, achieved under McCarthy five seasons ago.

While McCarthy’s squad was built on experience and star power, Zwane’s current side is notably younger—making their progress this season all the more impressive.
