Duba: I Almost Gave Up

Kaizer Chiefs rising star Wandile Duba says Amakhosi’s main objective is to win the Nedbank Cup and finish within the top two or three in the Betway Premiership this season.
The Phefeni Glamour Boys might achieve that, as they moved to sixth in the Betway Premiership after beating Sekhukhune United 1-0 at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Sunday.
While they missed an opportunity in the MTN8 as they finished outside the top eight and were thrashed by Mamelodi Sundowns in the Carling Knockout, Amakhosi still has a chance to end the barren years of trophies that is 10 years now.
They will start the Nedbank Cup last 32 when they host amateur side Free Agents at FNB Stadium on Sunday next weekend.
Duba believes that the 2014/15 season champions of the league can win the Nedbank Cup and finish within the top three in the league.
“We can see that things are not going our way this season but we have our goals even though we currently not doing well,” admitted Duba.
“Our goal this season is to maintain the second or third spot in the Betway Premiership and win the Nedbank Cup.”
The 20-year-old Duba has contributed to Chiefs’ small rise, scoring in Amakhosi’s 2-1 victory against Stellenbosch a few weeks ago.
As Duba also claimed the Man of the Match award in that game, he paid tribute to his grandmother.
“As I’m here today is because of my grandmother,” Duba said.
“I’m happy when I’m able to make her happy. This is still a small thing but a lot is coming that will make her very happy.
“I’m happy that my family sees me playing for Chiefs because they made so many sacrifices. I came here to Gauteng in 2017 coming from Mpumalanga, and there’s this other day I said I give up and I’m going back home [in Mpumalanga] but my family said I must not do that.
“At home, we were not good financially, they were trying here and there to make us not sleep with empty stomachs.”
