Matlou Unsure Of His Future

Kaizer Chiefs midfielder George Matlou feels he deserves a new contract with the club, considering that he works hard when given a chance despite having injuries.

Since joining Amakhosi in 2022, Matlou has been struggling with injuries, with his most recent injury keeping him out of the team for nine months.

Despite his injury challenges, the 26-year-old, who came on as a substitute, was part of the team that revived the glory days in Naturena after they defeated the Orlando Pirates 2-1 in the Nedbank Cup final.

“Yeah, I’d say,” said Matlou, when asked by the media at Naturena if he thinks he qualifies for a new deal.

“I come from an injury, yes, but I am not going to use that as an excuse that I didn’t play enough games and stuff. But the minutes that I played, I gave it my all, and I tried to help the team to prosper,” he added.

The midfielder is uncertain about his future with the team given that his contract expires in June, however decides to shift his focus on Saturday’s match against Polokwane City, which also happens to be their final game of the Betway Premiership 2024/25 season.

“Yes, my contract is coming to an end at the end of June,” said Matlou.

“I am going to leave that to God and the technical team, and the board to give me another opportunity. It’s football, so I am not going to plan for the future now. My focus is on winning Saturday’s game to get into the top eight.”

Chiefs are currently sitting in ninth position with 31 points from 27 games. Furthermore, they’re left with one game to play, which they must win to secure a top-eight spot, which qualifies them to play MTN8 next season, a tournament that they were not able to participate in last season.
