Matthews Keeps European Options Open Ahead Of Club World Cup
Mamelodi Sundowns attacker Tashreeq Matthews is keeping his future options open, particularly regarding a potential return to Europe.
When asked if the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup could be a platform for him to shine and attract European clubs again, Matthews said, “For now, I’m here at Sundowns, I’m focusing on what’s happening here. But you will never know what will happen in the future.”
The 24-year-old has had a successful stint in European football, joining Borussia Dortmund in 2018 at just 18 years old.
He later played for clubs in Sweden before returning to South Africa to join Sundowns in 2024. Developed at Ajax Cape Town, Matthews has had a remarkable journey in his career.
As Sundowns prepares to participate in the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States from June and July, Matthews is focused on the present moment.
However, he’s aware that the tournament could potentially open doors for him in the future.
Meanwhile, the Brazilians are set to play the final of the CAF Champions League against Pyramids, and Matthews also drew inspiration from Sundowns’ squad that won the Champions League in 2016.
“We’ve been told a lot about those guys who lifted the Champions League in 2016,” added. “The way they did it is unbelievable, and we have to take lessons from them for us to win this trophy.”
