Onyango Reflects On Historic 12th League Title Win

Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Dennis Onyango has expressed his elation and humility after winning his 12th league title in South Africa.

The 40-year-old veteran goalkeeper has been an integral part of the Brazilians’ success, and his dedication and hard work have paid off in the most spectacular way.

Onyango’s journey to this milestone has been nothing short of remarkable. He won his first league title in the 2007/08 season with SuperSport United, followed by two consecutive titles with Amatsatsantsa.

Since joining the Brazilians in 2011, Onyango has won nine league titles, including eight in a row since the 2017/18 season.

“To be honest, I never thought it would get 12 league titles, but the moment you work hard and go to the right teams, I think it opens up to you,” Onyango said, who has been offered a new contract to remain with the club next season.

“12 titles, it’s a lot, but there are people who are on eight titles, so they can catch up anytime. So, for me, it’s an incredible thing to be part of this group that has won eight league titles in a row.”

Despite facing stiff competition and limited game time since Ronwen Williams’ arrival in 2022, Onyango remained focused and committed to the team’s success.

“It was not easy, it’s been very difficult because we didn’t start very well this season with the few challenges of changing our coaches,” he said.

“But the guys remained focused because we knew that the target is to win the league and stay in the CAF Champions League and win more trophies.”

Onyango’s role in mentoring young players and stepping in for Williams when needed has been invaluable to the team’s success.

“For me, it’s always to push the young players in the team because we have many young players in the team and they want to achieve more,” he added.

“I was also replacing Ronwen when he was not around to try to assist the team to win trophies.”

As Onyango looks back on his illustrious career, he remains grateful for the opportunities he’s had and the success he’s achieved.

With 12 league titles under his belt, he’s undoubtedly the most decorated goalkeeper in South African football history.
