Lorch’s Future Uncertain As Mailula Confirms Wydad Exit

Former Mamelodi Sundowns striker Cassius Mailula has provided an update on his future at Moroccan giants Wydad Athletic Club, while the status of Thembinkosi Lorch remains unclear.
Mailula joined Wydad on a season-long loan with an option to buy from MLS outfit Toronto FC at the beginning of last season, shortly after coach Rulani Mokwena arrived at the club.
The Sundowns academy graduate recently featured for the Red Castle in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, where they exited in the group stages after failing to register a single win, losing all three matches.
Interestingly, Mailula and his compatriot, Lorch, who also joined Wydad on a loan deal from Sundowns in January, scored the club’s only goals in the tournament. The ex-Orlando Pirates star netted against Juventus, while the 24-year-old forward scored against Al Ain in their final match.
Following their premature exit from the global showpiece, the Limpopo-born player took to his social media accounts to announce his departure from Wydad in a heartfelt message to everyone associated with the Casablanca powerhouse:
“Dear Wydad family, it is with a heavy heart that I write this message, as I want to let you know I will not be continuing with the team for the upcoming season. My time with Wydad has been an incredibly special and rewarding experience, and I will forever be grateful for it,” the statement read.
“I would like to express my deepest gratitude to every one of you. From the security staff to the technical team to my teammates, your kindness and support have meant the world to me. You all hold a very special place in my heart.
“I must also thank the president for giving me the incredible opportunity to represent Wydad, and coach Rulani for his unwavering belief in me. Without his trust, I wouldn’t be the player I am today.
“I wish the club, the fans, and everyone involved nothing but continued success in the upcoming season and beyond. Dima Wydad.”
It remains to be seen whether Mailula will return to his parent club in Major League Soccer (MLS), where he struggled for game time, or explore other opportunities following his impressive spell at Wydad, where he recorded six goals and seven assists in 36 appearances for the 22-time Moroccan champions.
With Mailula having confirmed he won’t be at Wydad next season, it is unclear what the future holds for Lorch.
Lorch was particularly impressive during Wydad’s Club World Cup run. After he turned heads in the tournament, some fans appear to be advocating for the former PSL Footballer of the Season to return to Sundowns next season.
