Varsity Football 2025 Kicks Off With Thrilling Matches

The Varsity Football 2025 season got underway on Thursday with round one, featuring two victories and two draws, and a total of eight goals scored.

In the first match of the day, North-West University (NWU) and University of Johannesburg (UJ) played out a 1-1 draw.

UJ took the lead within three minutes, but NWU equalized in the 89th minute. Both teams earned one point each, with NWU sitting in third place and UJ in fourth.

In another exciting match, Wits University thrashed Central University of Technology (CUT) 4-1 at home in front of their fans at the Wits Rugby Stadium. Wits are currently leading the log, while CUT is at the bottom in eighth place.

Durban University of Technology (DUT), coached by veteran Zipho Dlangalala, suffered a 1-0 defeat at home against Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) in front of a packed crowd at Harry Gwala Stadium.

DUT are currently seventh on the log, while TUT are in second place with three points, behind log leaders Wits due to an inferior goal difference.

In the final match of the day, University of Pretoria (UP-Tuks) and University of the Free State (UFS) played out a goalless draw, earning one point each. UFS is currently fifth on the log, while UP-Tuks are sixth.

The Varsity Football league will resume next week on Thursday with round two, featuring all eight teams in action.

The fixtures are as follows: Wits University will host DUT at Wits Stadium, CUT will travel to Mahikeng to face NWU at NWU Mahikeng Stadium, UFS will face UJ at Shimla Park, and the highly anticipated Pretoria Derby will see UP-Tuks take on TUT at Tuks Stadium.
