Mokoena Joins Springboks Star As Investec Ambassador

Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Teboho Mokoena has been named an ambassador for Investec, joining two-time Rugby World Cup winner Cheslin Kolbe.

Investec’s roster of ambassadors also includes Mpumelelo Mhlongo, a world-record holder in the men’s 100m T44, who secured South Africa’s first medal with a time of 11.12 seconds. He followed this with a new T44 long jump world record of 7.12m.

According to a statement from Investec, “Teboho Mokoena’s journey from Bethlehem to the pinnacle of South African football is defined by determination and talent. Renowned for his tenacity and powerful long-range goals, he is a key player for Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana. With Investec by his side, he’s focused on excelling in his career while building a secure financial future and a lasting legacy for his son.”

Mokoena was named the PSL Footballer of the Season for the 2022/23 season. He also played a crucial role in Bafana Bafana’s bronze medal win at the Africa Cup of Nations, their first in 24 years. His performance earned him a spot in the CAF AFCON Team of the Year.

Kolbe, named the 2024 SA Rugby Player of the Year, was the first backline player to win the award since 2013. He also became the second player to score a try in a Rugby World Cup final for South Africa against England, leaving Joe Marler and Owen Farrell on the floor with his signature sidestep to score in Yokohama in 2019.

Mokoena hopes to achieve similar success with Bafana Bafana as they aim to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

“Cristiano Ronaldo is my role model. I admire his mental toughness, his work ethic, and how he improved himself over the years,” Mokoena said, speaking about the players he admires.

“He’s also business-minded, with ventures beyond football. Locally, Themba Zwane has been a benchmark for professionalism. I looked up to him when I was at Siwelele, and now I’m fortunate to play alongside him.”

Mokoena also emphasized the importance of financial literacy for athletes. “As athletes, many of us come from backgrounds where we weren’t taught how to manage money,” he explained.

“Without financial literacy, it’s easy to spend on things we don’t need. Fancy cars, fancy houses. And then when you retire, you can’t sustain your lifestyle. I made a lot of mistakes when I got my first paycheck. It’s important to be able to ask for help. At least now I feel I’m on the right track. Partnering with Investec helps me make better financial decisions and build a sustainable future.”

Mokoena and his Sundowns teammates will be in action this coming weekend when they face Orlando Pirates in the second-leg MTN8 semi-final at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday.

Mokoena’s crucial header in the first leg secured a 1-1 draw at Orlando Stadium, giving Sundowns a strong advantage heading into the return fixture.
