Broos ‘Furious’ Over Poor Pitch In Bloemfontein

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos is said to be furious about the poor condition of the pitch at Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein, ahead of crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, according to Sportswire.

Bafana Bafana are scheduled to play two matches at the venue: against Lesotho on 5 September and a high-stakes match against Nigeria on 9 September.

There are significant concerns that the pitch’s sandy condition could be a major issue during both of these critical matches. Coach Broos is expected to voice his concerns at a press conference at Dobsonville Stadium on Monday.

The pitch’s poor state is a result of recent sporting events. In June, the stadium hosted the men’s COSAFA Cup, where consecutive matches left the surface severely damaged. The situation was made worse by a recent Currie Cup rugby match on Friday, where the Toyota Cheetahs XV played the Suzuki Griquas. Rugby scrums, rucks, breakdowns, and lineout mauls in various areas of the field further degraded the playing surface.

Bafana Bafana’s World Cup Hopes

Despite the pitch concerns, Bafana Bafana’s fate is firmly in their own hands. Winning both upcoming matches would bring them closer to securing qualification for the FIFA World Cup.

The team currently leads Group F with 13 points from six matches, holding a five-point lead over second-place teams Rwanda and Benin.

However, there has been a lot of discussion about Teboho Mokoena, who played in a March match against Lesotho despite being suspended for accumulating two yellow cards. However, the Lesotho Football Association (LEFA) did not file a formal protest within the required 24-hour period, which has seemingly put the South African Football Association (SAFA) in the clear.

While FIFA recently released a list of fines and punishments from recent qualifiers, the names of Lesotho, Bafana Bafana, and Mokoena were not on it. This suggests the matter is closed, as sources have confirmed that FIFA has not launched its own investigation into the incident.
