Bafana Qualify For 2026 FIFA World Cup After Beating Rwanda, As Nigeria’s Win Over Benin

Bafana Bafana have qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Rwanda 3-0 in a decisive Group C match at Mbombela Stadium on Tuesday — with Victor Osimhen’s hat-trick for Nigeria against Benin sealing South Africa’s place at the global showpiece.

This marks Bafana Bafana’s first qualification for the World Cup since 2002, and their first appearance since hosting the tournament in 2010.

Nigeria’s Osimhen Helps Bafana With Hat-Trick

South Africa went into the match under immense pressure, needing to beat Rwanda and hope Nigeria would overcome Benin in Uyo.

Their hopes were kept alive as Osimhen opened the scoring for Nigeria in the second minute, later adding two more goals to complete a sensational hat-trick that helped South Africa leapfrog Benin in the standings.

With both results going their way, Bafana Bafana finished top of Group C with 18 points from 10 matches, one point ahead of Nigeria and Benin, who dropped to third.

Heading into the final round, Benin led the group with 17 points — two ahead of South Africa — and needed help from Rwanda to deny Broos’s men qualification.

Broos Makes Key Changes

Coach Hugo Broos made four changes to his starting lineup for the must-win fixture.

Suspended defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi was replaced by Khulumane Ndamane, who partnered Nkosinathi Sibisi in central defence. Thapelo Morena also came in for Mohau Nkota, while Evidence Makgopa started up front in place of Lyle Foster, who missed the game with a knee injury.

Midfielder Thalente Mbatha replaced Sphephelo Sithole and made an immediate impact, firing in a stunning opener in the fifth minute from outside the box — leaving Rwandan goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari with no chance.

Appollis and Makgopa Seal Victory

After Oswin Appollis was denied twice from close range, he finally found the net in the 26th minute, turning inside the box to slot home after a clever assist from Makgopa.

Makgopa then put the result beyond doubt in the second half, heading home from an Appollis corner to make it 3-0.

Rwanda’s Abeddy Biramahire came close to scoring in the 82nd minute, his powerful shot striking the post before bouncing away from Ronwen Williams’s goal.

Redemption After FIFA Sanction

The qualification comes as sweet relief for Bafana Bafana after they were docked three points by FIFA a few weeks ago for fielding an ineligible player, Teboho Mokoena, in March’s qualifiers.

Mokoena had accumulated two yellow cards that should have triggered a one-match suspension, resulting in a 3-0 forfeit to Lesotho.

That decision temporarily dropped South Africa from first to second in the group, putting their campaign in jeopardy.

After a frustrating 0-0 draw with Zimbabwe in Durban last Friday, Bafana responded in style at Mbombela, delivering a commanding performance when it mattered most.

SAFA Set for Financial Boost

With qualification secured, the South African Football Association (SAFA) is set to earn more than $6 million (R110 million) from FIFA in participation bonuses and preparation grants.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup, to be jointly hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico, will mark a new era for Bafana Bafana under coach Hugo Broos, whose side extended their unbeaten run in World Cup qualifiers since November 2017.

Meanwhile, as Nigeria won 4-0, it reached the playoffs. They will play matches in November and also in March next year.

Final Group C Standings

  1. South Africa – 18 points
  2. Nigeria – 17 points
  3. Benin – 17 points
  4. Lesotho – 12 points
  5. Rwanda – 11 points
  6. Zimbabwe – 5 points
