León Scores On Debut As Sundowns Go Top

Mamelodi Sundowns moved to the top of the Betway Premiership standings as new signing Brayan León scored on debut in a 2–0 victory over Orbit College at Loftus Versfeld on Monday night.
The win saw Sundowns begin 2026 in style, moving to 29 points from 14 matches. They now sit one point clear at the top, although second-placed Orlando Pirates have two games in hand. With the season unfolding as it is, the title race appears set to be a two-horse battle between the PSL heavyweights.
Despite head coach Miguel Cardoso making several changes to his starting line-up, Sundowns dominated proceedings and could have won by a wider margin given the number of chances they created.
The Brazilians came into the match having recently signed Monnapule Saleng, León, and Khulumane Ndamane. Notably, Saleng had spent the first half of the season on loan at Orbit College from Pirates.
Of the new arrivals, León was the only player named on the bench, while Bafana Bafana AFCON stars Khuliso Mudau and Aubrey Modiba were rested, while Teboho Mokoena was suspended. However, Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen Williams returned between the posts following South Africa’s round-of-16 exit at the Africa Cup of Nations, which concluded on Sunday.
With several internationals rested, Cardoso handed a debut to Thato Sibiya, while former Bafana Bafana striker Lebo Mothiba led the line.
Orbit arrived in Pretoria under pressure after losing their previous three league matches, increasing scrutiny on head coach Pogiso Mokhoye. In an effort to strengthen the squad for the second half of the season, the club signed former Sundowns winger Surprise Ralani, who was named on the bench.
In the first-ever meeting between the two sides, the gulf in quality was evident from the opening whistle. Sundowns settled quickly on the ball and nearly took an early lead in the fourth minute when Sphelele Mkhulise picked out Jayden Adams with a clever pass. Adams allowed the ball to run across his body before unleashing a powerful strike that rattled the upright, with goalkeeper Cyril Chibwe beaten.
Orbit struggled to cope with the pressure, opting to sit deep and look for counter-attacking opportunities in the early stages.
The match was briefly halted due to floodlight issues, but once play resumed, Sundowns capitalised on a costly error from Chibwe. Arthur Sales closed down the goalkeeper, and after the ball broke kindly for him, Sales finished acrobatically with a bicycle kick to open the scoring in the 22nd minute.
At the start of the second half, Sundowns introduced León in place of Mothiba, while Orbit brought on Ralani, who replaced Ikameng Ramosala.
Looking to increase the tempo and secure a second goal, Cardoso later introduced Themba Zwane and Marcelo Allende, replacing Kutlwano Letlhaku and Adams.
In the 65th minute, León made an immediate impact, rising highest to meet Sibiya’s cross and heading past Chibwe to score his first goal for Sundowns on debut, much to the delight of the Loftus crowd.
Orbit were handed a rare opportunity to pull one back, but Ayanda Lukhele failed to make clean contact with a Ralani cross, allowing Williams — who had been largely untroubled — to remain untested.
Sundowns nearly added a third when Miguel Reisinho received a pass from Nuno Santos, but his effort was superbly cleared off the line by Ramahlwe Mphahlele.
With his debut strike, León became only the second Colombian player to score for Mamelodi Sundowns in the PSL, capping off an impressive night for the defending champions.
