Ouaddou Raises Defensive Concerns After Spain Trip
Orlando Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has expressed concern over the number of goals his side conceded during their four-match pre-season tour of Spain.
The Buccaneers wrapped up their preparations with a 1-0 defeat to Neom FC on Friday, ending the tour on a disappointing note.
Pirates travelled to Spain with a squad of more than 30 players, aiming to integrate several new signings and promote young talent ahead of the new campaign.
The pre-season tour also provided the technical team with an opportunity to assess the squad as they prepare for their opening Betway Premiership fixture against Milford next weekend.
Across their four matches in Spain, the Soweto giants scored six goals but also conceded six, a defensive record that has raised concerns.
“I think the entire pre-season was positive in terms of what we achieved,” said Ouddou.
“We came here to create cohesion, to integrate the new players and young players, but also to continue our preparations. We were in phase three of our preparations, and I think we have completed it. Next week we’ll move into phase four to sharpen the team ahead of the first league game.
“I think, from a fitness perspective, we reached our target. A lot of players got minutes, and that was another objective. There are many positives we can take from this camp.
“However, I have to admit I’m a little disappointed with one aspect of the camp. I think we conceded too many goals, which is a major concern because we were so strong defensively in the league. It’s something we need to fix quickly.”
Despite his concerns, Ouaddou believes most of his squad is ready for the new season as Pirates look to defend their domestic treble.
“It’s one area I’m disappointed with, but overall I think the players did very well. Around 75% of the team is ready for the league,” he said.
“We still have a group of players returning from the World Cup. We can see they may be carrying some fatigue, so we need to find the right balance between giving them enough rest and gradually integrating them into the team because we need them. Overall, though, we can be satisfied.”
