Mosimane Set To Announce Final Bafana Squad On Thursday
Bafana Bafana head coach Pitso Mosimane will announce his final squad on Thursday for the upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers taking place later this month.
Mosimane, who succeeded Hugo Broos last month, named a preliminary squad two weeks ago to narrow his player selection pool and monitor fitness ahead of the final roster announcement.
In taking this approach, Mosimane is following the established template that served Broos well during his five-year tenure.
Mosimane—who joins Stuart Baxter as only the second manager to be appointed Bafana Bafana head coach twice—begins the qualifying campaign by hosting Guinea at the Orlando Amstel Arena on 26 September. Four days later, South Africa will travel to Egypt to face Eritrea at a neutral venue.
Coincidentally, Broos also began his first reign as head coach at the Orlando Amstel Arena, leading Bafana Bafana to a friendly victory over Uganda.
Following the two AFCON qualifiers, South Africa will remain in Cairo to face Egypt in an international friendly at Cairo International Stadium on 4 October.
Looking ahead in Group D, Bafana Bafana will also face Benni McCarthy’s Kenya side in a qualifying double-header scheduled for November.
Because Kenya has already qualified automatically as AFCON co-hosts alongside Uganda and Tanzania, South Africa must finish atop Group D to secure a spot at their third consecutive AFCON tournament.
