Kekana: It’s A Must-Win Against Mokwena

Mamelodi Sundowns defender Grant Kekana anticipates a tough encounter in their final group stage match against MC Alger at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Saturday, but insists it is a must-win game.

Pressure is becoming intense on the Brazilians, who must secure a victory to book their place in the knockout stages.

They have won just one of their five matches so far, leaving no room for error heading into this game. However, given the experience they possess in continental football, Sundowns have the quality needed to rise to the occasion.

Sundowns currently occupy the third spot in Group C with six points, while MC Alger is in second with seven points and needs only a draw to progress.

The last time Sundowns failed to reach the knockout phase since winning the CAF title in 2016 was in 2018, when they finished third in Group C behind Wydad Casablanca and Horoya.

“I think we are in a good place, we’re obviously preparing well for Saturday’s game,” said Kekana.

“It’s going to be a tough one; it’s a must-win for us. That’s why we’re urging all the supporters to please come out in numbers and pack Loftus. We need 12 men on Saturday. It’s going to be very difficult, but it’s a challenge that we’re looking forward to.”

Kekana has acknowledged the supporters’ frustrations towards the club, which at one point escalated to fans calling for the dismissal of sporting director Flemming Berg and coach Miguel Cardoso.

“We understand the fans’ frustrations,” Kekana stated.

“They will obviously expect better from us, and we also expect better from ourselves, and when I talk about bringing the team back, I talk about giving that extra 20%. That’s what we’re working hard towards, and I think there will be a turnaround soon.”
