KZN DSAC Leads 25,000 Walkers In Durban

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Sport, Arts and Culture (DSAC) brought excitement and vibrant energy to this year’s East Coast Big Walk, as thousands of participants gathered for one of South Africa’s biggest walking events.
The scenic route stretched from uShaka Marine World along Durban’s famous beach promenade to People’s Park at the iconic Moses Mabhida Stadium, creating a lively atmosphere filled with community spirit, fitness, and entertainment.
DSAC played a major role in enhancing the experience through its interactive activation station, which kept participants entertained and active throughout the event. Attendees enjoyed a variety of engaging activities, including sporting challenges, rope skipping, e-sports, and the traditional Umlabalaba board game, showcasing both modern and indigenous recreational activities.
KwaZulu-Natal Sport, Arts and Culture MEC Mntomuhle Khawula joined more than 25,000 participants who took part in the event.
Many DSAC staff members were also among the walkers, leading by example and reinforcing the department’s commitment to promoting active and healthy lifestyles within communities.
Held under the inspiring theme “Walking in Your Shoes,” the event encouraged unity, empathy, wellness, and social cohesion among people from different backgrounds.
DSAC ensured that the finish line celebration reflected the spirit of togetherness and community in motion, with music, games, and wellness-focused activities creating a memorable atmosphere for participants of all ages.
The East Coast Big Walk continues to grow as a flagship event on South Africa’s sporting and wellness calendar, attracting thousands annually.
Through its involvement, DSAC once again demonstrated the important role sport, recreation, arts, and culture can play in building healthier and more connected communities across KwaZulu-Natal.
