“Right At The Top” – An Emotional Ackermann On Bulls’ Miraculous URC Turnaround

Vodacom Bulls coach Johan Ackermann admitted that reaching the United Rugby Championship final seemed almost unimaginable during the team’s difficult mid-season slump, making their latest achievement one of the most rewarding moments of his coaching career.

The Pretoria outfit booked their place in a fourth URC final with a hard-fought 22-21 victory over Glasgow Warriors at Scottish Gas Murrayfield in Edinburgh. The result also served as sweet revenge for their 21-16 defeat to the Glaswegians in 2024’s final at Loftus Versfeld.

For the Bulls, the victory was about overcoming adversity that at one stage threatened to derail their campaign entirely. Reflecting on the journey, Ackermann spoke candidly about the emotional toll of the team’s losing streak and the resilience required to turn the season around.

“If you are in a spiral the way we were, you wouldn’t imagine that you’d be playing in a final,” Ackermann said.

“It was a tough time for me personally and for the team. For everyone around the team, losing is never nice, and losing consecutive games always creates doubt about your own ability.”

The three-time SA Coach of the Year said the achievement was made even more meaningful by the unity shown throughout that difficult period.

“That is why this final feels very special to me. We have not achieved anything yet, but just seeing how the staff and players have stuck together, worked for one another, and reached the final means a lot.”

Ackermann, who succeeded Jake White after last season’s campaign, was quick to deflect attention away from himself, instead highlighting the importance of those who continued to support him and the team when results were not going their way.

“It’s not about me; it’s about the people around me — your support system that believes in you and keeps believing in you. People who believe there is a bigger purpose,” said the former Gloucester coach.

“Those are the things that carry you through tough times, so I can only thank the people who supported me through prayer.”

With a repeat of last year’s final now on the horizon, Ackermann revealed that the immediate focus would be on ensuring his squad is physically and mentally refreshed before preparations begin in earnest.

“We need to freshen up the players. We will head back to South Africa; we’re not going to stay here,” he said.

“We’ll give the boys a few days to recover, then we’ll start planning and building towards the final.”

Asked where the victory ranks among his coaching achievements, Ackermann struggled to contain his emotions.

“This must be right at the top. I am lost for words. I couldn’t believe the whistle went and we had won,” he said.

“The players showed so much commitment. I am incredibly proud of the team. It’s a privilege to be part of this group, and this occasion and the journey we’ve been on make it even more special.”

Ackermann concluded by praising the character displayed by his players, describing the triumph as one of the finest victories of his coaching career.

“This is one of the best victories I’ve had as a coach, simply because of the character the players showed,” he said.
