Broos Blasts ‘Disappointing’ Final World Cup Warm-Up

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos pulled no punches after his side’s final FIFA World Cup warm-up match, warning that the team must drastically improve to get results at the global showpiece.

Bafana Bafana played out a 1-1 stalemate against Jamaica at the Estadio Hidalgo in Pachuca, Mexico, on Saturday afternoon.

Second-half goals from Lyle Foster and Dwayne Atkinson canceled each other out, leaving Broos deeply unsatisfied with the performance.

The result leaves Bafana Bafana without a win in five matches across all competitions, a slump dating back to their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations exit against Cameroon.

Broos previously lambasted his squad’s discipline during that AFCON tournament in Morocco, and his post-match comments suggest those underlying issues have not yet been resolved ahead of the world’s biggest sports tournament.

“The performance was not what I expected,” Broos admitted.

“I think we have to analyse the game very carefully, identify what was really wrong, and try to improve those areas over the next few days so that we are ready for the first match against Mexico.

“I thought we were close to where we needed to be before the opening game, but for me it was a disappointing performance this afternoon.

“So, yes, I have to look at what went wrong.”

The Belgian tactician pointed squarely at his players’ attitude.

“I think it was also a matter of mentality. We have to do more — much more — than we did this afternoon if we want to achieve good results at the World Cup over the next few weeks.”

Since arriving in Mexico earlier this week, Bafana Bafana have been quietly preparing at their base camp in Pachuca. They face a massive test this Thursday, 11 June 2026, when they take on tournament co-hosts Mexico in the World Cup opening match at the iconic Estadio Azteca.

Following their Group A opener against Mexico, South Africa will face the Czech Republic on 18 June, before playing their final group fixture on 25 June.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup officially runs from 11 June to 19 July.
