Khune Slams Constant Coaching Changes And Rebuilding Cycles At Chiefs

Kaizer Chiefs legend Itumeleng Khune has raised concerns about the club’s ongoing rebuilding process, particularly the frequent changes in the coaching department.

His comments come after the Soweto giants parted ways with co-coaches Cedric Kaze and Ben Khalil Youssef, who took charge at the start of the 2025/26 season following the departure of Nasreddine Nabi.

Under their leadership, Chiefs secured a third-place finish in the Betway Premiership and qualified for the CAF Confederation Cup, marking the club’s return to continental football.

The top-eight finish represented a significant achievement for the Glamour Boys, who had failed to finish in the top eight during the previous three seasons.

Khune believes the constant cycle of rebuilding must come to an end at a club of Kaizer Chiefs’ stature. He argued that the club should give a coach a minimum of five years to implement a vision and long-term strategy.

“That rebuilding word, I’ve heard it for 10 years,” said Khune.

“For a team like Kaizer Chiefs, they need consistency. They need to appoint a highly experienced coach who can lead the project for the next five to 10 years without having to rebuild again.

“If you look at the past three seasons, Chiefs haven’t really performed to their standards because the trophies haven’t been coming. Chiefs are known as cup specialists, and unfortunately, for the past 10 years, we’ve been struggling.”

The former Chiefs captain added that he hopes the club can start next season by winning the MTN8, believing it would set a positive tone for the campaign.

“We’ve found our feet again, and the team has finished in the top eight. Hopefully, they can begin the new season by winning the MTN8 and set the tone for the rest of the campaign,” said Khune.

“We can’t keep rebuilding every season. We need a coach who can say, ‘This is my project for the next five years,’ and then be given the opportunity to fulfil it. If that happens, Chiefs will be back to winning trophies.”
