Bafana Striking Depth: Sikhosana Sounds Firepower Warning Ahead Of Mexico Opener

Legendary forward Jerry Sikhosana has voiced deep concerns over Bafana Bafana’s attacking frontline for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, drawing a stark contrast to the elite squad depth he battled during France 1998.

During that historic 1998 campaign, Sikhosana competed for a starting berth against a formidable, European-based trio: Benni McCarthy (Ajax Amsterdam, Netherlands), Shaun Bartlett (FC Zurich, Switzerland), and the late Phil Masinga (Bari, Italy).

Although Sikhosana had just propelled Orlando Pirates to CAF Champions League glory three years before, he found himself low in the striking pecking order under French tactician Philippe Troussier.

What Happened in Bafana Bafana’s 1998 World Cup Campaign?

Sikhosana watched from the bench as South Africa suffered a 3-0 opening-day defeat to hosts France in Group C, followed by a tense 1-1 draw with Denmark.

His moment arrived in the final group clash against Saudi Arabia. After Bartlett opened the scoring, Troussier turned to Sikhosana, introducing him at the start of the second half in place of McCarthy.

The substitution paid immediate dividends. Deep into injury time, Sikhosana’s direct running forced a penalty inside the box. Bartlett coolly converted from the spot to secure a 2-2 draw.

How Does the 2026 Frontline Compare to 1998?

The structural reality facing Hugo Broos’ side ahead of Thursday’s opening match against Mexico at the Estadio Azteca is vastly different. Sikhosana fears the current attack lacks the mobility and international pedigree required to unlock elite global defences.

“My concerns are upfront,” Sikhosana warned.

“We are a country that plays a style of football that delivers into the box, but we don’t have mobile forwards. A modern number nine cannot just stand and wait for the ball while defenders compress the space behind them. You need players who can move dynamically.”

While Broos has selected Evidence Makgopa, Lyle Foster, and Iqraam Rayners for the 2026 tournament, all three forwards endured mixed form and varying struggles at their respective clubs this past season. This lack of consistency is a far cry from the lethal attacking arsenal of 1998.

“All those players in ’98 were based abroad,” Sikhosana reflected.

“Shaun Bartlett was in Switzerland, Benni McCarthy was in Holland, and Phil Masinga was in Italy. I was the only local striker in the group, and breaking into that lineup was incredibly difficult.

“But when I got my chance against Saudi Arabia, I made it count and won the penalty. Even the coach told me afterward he wished he had used me better. I proved what local talent can do on the big stage, but today’s context is very different.”
