Controversial Referee Named For Bafana’s Historic World Cup Decider

FIFA has appointed Argentinian controversial referee Facundo Tello to oversee Bafana Bafana’s decisive World Cup Group A clash against South Korea this Thursday at Estadio Monterrey.
Tello famously made global headlines by issuing 10 red cards in a single Argentinian Champions Trophy match in 2022, signalling that Bafana must maintain strict structural discipline.
The high-stakes encounter will decide which nation advances to the Round of 32. Tello will anchor the South American officiating team, flanked by assistant referees Juan Pablo Belatti and Gabriel Chade. Colombia’s Andres Rojas will serve as the fourth official, with compatriot Alexander Guzman named as the reserve referee.
The clash in Monterrey marks a historic first, as the two sides have never met in any competitive or friendly fixture.
Both teams enter the final matchday with their qualification hopes alive, though the margins are razor-thin. Group leaders and co-hosts Mexico have already sealed advancement after winning their opening two matches. South Korea currently occupies second place with three points, while Bafana Bafana sit at the bottom of the table with a solitary point.
Hugo Broos’ side must secure a maximum three points against the Tigers of Asia to stand any chance of leaping into the knockout stages, ensuring an explosive battle on the pitch under Tello’s watchful eye.
Although South Africa has never played South Korea, Bafana Bafana holds a mixed historical record against East Asian opponents at the World Cup, most notably drawing 1-1 against Saudi Arabia in 1998 and losing 3-0 to Uruguay in 2010, highlighting their struggles under global pressure outside of African soil.
