South African Referees Handed World Cup Duty

South African match officials Abongile Tom and Zakhele Siwela have once again been entrusted by FIFA with officiating duties at the FIFA World Cup after being appointed for the final Group H encounter between Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia.
The match is scheduled to take place on Saturday at Houston Stadium and will mark the fourth World Cup assignment of the tournament for the South African duo.
Tom will serve as the fourth official, while Siwela has been appointed as the reserve assistant referee — the same roles they have fulfilled in each of their previous three assignments.
Their latest appointment underlines the confidence FIFA continues to place in the two officials, who have consistently performed their duties to a high standard throughout the competition.
Being selected for another crucial group-stage fixture is a significant achievement and reflects the important role they are playing on football’s biggest stage.
The encounter between Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia is expected to be a tense and fiercely contested affair. Although the two nations will be meeting for the first time, there is plenty at stake as both sides still have a chance of qualifying for the Round of 32.
Cape Verde currently occupy third place in Group H with two points, while Saudi Arabia sit fourth with one point.
A victory for either team would see them move into second place and keep their qualification hopes alive. However, progression to the knockout stages will also depend on the outcome of the group’s other fixture, with both sides requiring Uruguay to lose to Spain.
With qualification hanging in the balance, the match promises to provide plenty of drama and excitement as both nations battle for a place in the knockout rounds.
For Tom and Siwela, meanwhile, another World Cup appointment serves as further recognition of their growing reputation on the international stage and highlights South Africa’s continued presence among the world’s elite match officials.
