‘We Can Write History’: Broos

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has admitted that a lack of experience among some of his players contributed to their defeat against Mexico, but remains optimistic ahead of South Africa’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup clash against South Korea.

Bafana Bafana will face South Korea in their final Group A match at Estadio Monterrey on Thursday, with the Asian side equally motivated after suffering a defeat to Mexico in their previous outing.

While South Africa require nothing less than a victory to secure a place in the knockout stages, a draw would be enough for South Korea to advance.

Should Bafana Bafana progress to the last 32, it would mark a historic milestone for South African football, as the national team would qualify for the World Cup knockout rounds for the first time.

Reflecting on the opening defeat to Mexico, Broos said the squad’s lack of experience on football’s biggest stage played a significant role in the result, with some players struggling to cope with the magnitude of the occasion.

“I think we were a little bit overwhelmed by the situation in our first game,” said Broos.

“We have a team that lacks experience in matches like these and at tournaments of this magnitude. That was the reason we did not play the way we wanted to against Mexico.

“But against Czechia, it was already much better. Now the motivation is there because, as I said at the beginning of this conference, we have an opportunity to write history.”

While Broos rallies the squad, he will have to re-engineer his midfield because goalscoring maestro Teboho Mokoena is suspended due to yellow cards, opening the door for Siphephelo “Yaya” Sithole’s return from suspension.

Broos added that the squad is highly motivated ahead of the decisive encounter and believes his players are ready to give everything in pursuit of a place in the knockout stages.

“There is a great deal of motivation within the group, and I feel the boys are ready for Thursday. They are prepared to fight until the very last second of the game to achieve that victory.

“But again, there is also an opponent. We will see which of the two teams is better on the day,” Broos said.
