Hollywoodbets Durban July Set To Inject Over R800 Million Into Economy

eThekwini Mayor Cyril Xaba has confirmed that the upcoming Hollywoodbets Durban July is projected to inject over R800 million into the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), building on the R840 million economic contribution recorded at last year’s event.
This year’s projections indicate that more than 40,000 visitors will attend the iconic race, driving an estimated R230 million in direct spending and generating a broader macroeconomic contribution of approximately R798 million for the local economy. Furthermore, the event’s extensive value chain is expected to support an estimated 1,105 jobs.

Widely regarded as KwaZulu-Natal’s premier sporting and social calendar event, the spectacle will be broadcast worldwide, with the SABC and SuperSport carrying the live feed. The event will take place on Saturday, 4 July, at the historic Greyville Racecourse, celebrating a milestone 130 years of existence.
City Fully Prepared for Influx
Speaking at the official launch on Wednesday, Mayor Xaba assured residents, visitors, and stakeholders that the city is fully equipped to welcome the thousands of guests expected to descend on Durban.
“The direct spend is projected to reach around R230 million, with the broader economic contribution estimated at nearly R800 million to our GDP,” Xaba stated.
“These figures confirm that the Hollywoodbets Durban July has not only recovered but is firmly reclaiming its premier position as the leading horseracing spectacle on the African continent, featuring top stables from across the globe.
“This event is a massive driver for socio-economic growth for eThekwini, the province, and the country as a whole. The Durban July weekend transforms our city into a vibrant hub of economic activity, providing a substantial boost to our hotels, guest houses, restaurants, transport operators, tourist attractions, retailers, and informal traders.”
A Platform for the Creative Economy
Mayor Xaba highlighted that the event also serves as a critical incubator for the city’s fashion and creative sectors through the Durban Fashion Fair (DFF) program.
“Through the Durban Fashion Fair program, we are nurturing the next generation of fashion entrepreneurs,” Xaba added. “Nine emerging designers who have completed a rigorous ten-month mentorship program will showcase their talent through the prestigious DFF Rising Stars Collection on the Celebration Stage.”
To ensure a seamless experience, the municipality has synchronized extensive safety, security, and traffic management plans. Metro Police and working law enforcement agencies will maintain high visibility and remain on high alert in and around the Greyville precinct throughout the festival weekend.
Africa’s Richest Race
Stephen Marshall, representing the event’s hosting and broadcast management, noted that the racecourse will host 29 independently operated hospitality venues and VIP marquees, supported by a workforce of more than 9,000 event staff and an additional 1,000 security personnel.
“While every owner, trainer, jockey, breeder, and groom dreams of winning the Hollywoodbets Durban July, the event simultaneously creates opportunities across multiple sectors, supporting thousands of livelihoods,” Marshall said.
Hollywoodbets Brand and Communications Manager Devin Heffer announced that the winner’s purse has doubled to a staggering R10 million, officially making the Hollywoodbets Durban July the richest horse race on the African continent.
Heffer added that significant joint investments have gone into substantial infrastructure upgrades at the venue ahead of the milestone running. Spectators can look forward to new grandstands, a remodeled parade ring, roofing improvements, enhanced sound systems, fresh paintwork, backup generators, and massive digital screens designed to transform the trackside experience.
This year’s fashion theme, “Country Allure,” invites designers and racegoers to explore a sophisticated fusion of rural elegance, timeless charm, and contemporary style, celebrating both heritage and modern fashion trends on Africa’s biggest racing stage.
