SA Youngster To Embark On A Groundbreaking Journey
At just 18 years old, Makhosazana “Khosi” Dlomo is set to embark on a groundbreaking journey as she represents South Africa at an international Tent Pegging competition in Jordan – the Middle East this January.
Khosi is not only a rising star in the world of equestrian sports but also the sole young black female rider in the unique and challenging sport of Tent Pegging.
Khosi’s passion for Tent Pegging ignited at a friend’s birthday party in 2013. With each horseback ride sparking a deeper interest, she quickly transformed this newfound hobby into a lifelong passion. Her dedication and talent have not only earned her numerous awards but have also made her a role model for aspiring equestrians worldwide.
Growing up in KwaZulu-Natal, Khosi began competing in local competitions by age nine. Her resilience and skill soon led her to represent her province and eventually earn a spot on the South African Under 15 Girls Team in 2021. By 2024, Khosi’s leadership qualities shone as she captained the prestigious Kwa-Zulu Natal Under 21 Team.
For Khosi, Tent Pegging is more than just competing. “This sport isn’t just a hobby—it’s where I find peace, joy, and connection. Horses have taught me patience, resilience, and humility,” she shares. Reflecting on her journey, Khosi adds, “My Tent Pegging journey began in the most unexpected way—a friend’s birthday party in 2013. At first, I thought the highlight of the day would be cake, but little did I know that climbing onto the back of a horse would spark a lifelong passion. That day, something clicked. After a few wobbly attempts at staying upright, I was hooked. I begged my mom relentlessly to take me back to that place, and when she finally gave in, my journey truly began. From that moment, I never looked back.”
During the COVID-19 lockdown, when equestrian sports faced a pause, Khosi used the time to refine her skills in dressage, further broadening her horsemanship and understanding of the sport.
Khosi’s coach Dalene Baksa comments, “Growing up in KwaZulu-Natal, Khosi began competing in local competitions by age nine. Her resilience and skill soon led her to represent her province and eventually earn a spot on the South African Under 15 Girls Team in 2021. By 2024, Khosi’s leadership qualities shone as she captained the prestigious Kwa-Zulu Natal under 21 Team at the inter-provincial championship held in September at Lion’s River.”
“The journey in this sport has been a profound experience,” expressed the parents of a promising athlete. “Witnessing the ups and downs, from falls and injuries to triumphant achievements like making the merits team, has truly been an emotional ride. What began as a simple birthday party invitation for a nine-year-old has evolved into an extraordinary pathway for my daughter. Each race is a test of nerves, but her perseverance fills us with immense pride. We eagerly anticipate her upcoming trip to Jordan, confident it will be another milestone in her impressive journey. A heartfelt thanks to Coach Dalene, whose unwavering guidance has been instrumental in Khosi’s success.”
As Khosi prepares to compete in Jordan this January, she remains committed to inspiring future generations in the tent-pegging community. Her journey symbolizes not just personal success but also her vision of inclusivity and empowerment in the equestrian world.
