Durban Anticipates R690 Million Economic Boost For Durban July

The eThekwini Municipality has confirmed that the city expects to generate R690 million through tourism for the upcoming Hollywoodbets Durban July next month.
This event is a major highlight on the city’s calendar, drawing visitors from across the country and beyond to Durban.
All roads lead to Durban for the Hollywoodbets Durban July, taking place at the Hollywoodbets Greyville Racecourse on 5 July. This year’s theme, “Marvels of Mzansi,” celebrates South Africa’s rich heritage, cultural diversity, and breathtaking landscapes, paying tribute to the nation’s extraordinary achievements.
The Durban July is an event with a significant economic impact on the city. Approximately 45,000 people are anticipated to descend on Durban for the horse racing event.
Projections indicate a R278.6 million boost in direct spending and a R689.4 million contribution to the GDP. Furthermore, 4,403 jobs are expected to be created during this period.
Businesses across various sectors, including the informal economy, will experience a boost. Other sectors set to benefit from the Durban July include fashion and textiles, transportation, restaurants, hair and beauty, and fast-food vendors.
Mayor Urges Celebration Of Durban’s Vibrant Spirit
eThekwini Mayor, Councillor Cyril Xaba, urged everyone to celebrate the vibrant spirit of Durban as the city transforms into a hub of glamour, excitement, and world-class entertainment.
“Come and experience the thrill of the races, the stunning fashion, and the unforgettable moments that make the Durban July a must-attend event,” said Mayor Xaba.
“Whether you’re a punter, a horse racing enthusiast, or simply looking to enjoy a fabulous day, come and be part of this iconic celebration.”
He added that Durban is the place to be this July, where unforgettable memories are made, and the city comes alive with energy and joy.
Exciting Weekend Events And Previous Success
A line-up of exciting events will take place over the Durban July weekend, including Fact Durban Rocks, Anywhere in Your City, Any Given Sunday, Mojo’s July Weekend, and the All White Maxi’s Lifestyle Party, among others. Winter season events hosted in Durban bring much-needed economic spin-offs, especially for the local tourism and hospitality sectors.
Last year’s Hollywoodbets Durban July saw the racecourse packed to capacity with more than 50,000 spectators.
This comes on the heels of the eThekwini Municipality’s tourism sector projecting an economic boost exceeding R100 million, with R17 million contributed through tax, solely from the Nedbank Cup final between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, which was played at Moses Mabhida Stadium on May 10th.
