Durban Set For R100 Million Economic Boost From Nedbank Cup Final

The eThekwini municipality’s tourism sector projects an economic boost exceeding R100 million solely from Saturday’s Nedbank Cup final.

Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates are scheduled to clash in the Nedbank Cup final at the Moses Mabhida Stadium this afternoon.

According to figures seen by Sportswire, the total direct impact on the city’s economy is estimated at R93,007,975, with a multiplier effect (indirect or induced impact) of R137,092,706.

The total contribution to the city’s GDP (direct, indirect, and induced) is projected to be R230,100,680, potentially creating 415 jobs. The estimated tax revenue contribution is R17,162,796.

The event is anticipated to generate a significant direct economic impact of over R93 million for the city.

“Based on our business intelligence, our accommodation occupancy rates were between 93 and 95 percent full just a day ago,” stated Winile Mdungwa, the Deputy Head of the eThekwini municipality, 2025 Nedbank Cup Stakeholder engagement event on Friday.

“I’m told that we are currently receiving further requests for accommodation, indicating that we are nearing 100 percent occupancy.”

“Therefore, in terms of visitor spending, we are looking at over R90 million from those coming into the city. While the stadium has a capacity of 55,000 spectators, there are also numerous individuals without tickets who are in Durban to experience the atmosphere.”

“So, we are anticipating revenue exceeding R100 million [excluding VAT]. We are also very excited about this.”

This positive economic forecast comes despite earlier issues with the ticket distribution system during the week. An approved system by the PSL initially allocated tickets to over 55,000 fans, while the stadium’s capacity was later reduced to 49,000 due to the upgrade, causing significant problems for supporters.
