Bafana Star Ready To Answer Critics In High-Stakes World Cup Match

Bafana Bafana midfielder Sphephelo Sithole has acknowledged the quality of South Korea ahead of their crucial final Group A clash at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but insists South Africa are fully motivated and prepared to give everything in a must-win encounter.

Sithole missed Bafana’s match against the Czech Republic after receiving a red card in the team’s World Cup opener against co-hosts Mexico.

The 27-year-old came under heavy criticism on social media following that performance, with some supporters questioning his display in the defeat.

With Teboho Mokoena suspended for Thursday’s clash after accumulating two yellow cards, Sithole is expected to return to the starting line-up.

The midfielder admitted that the intensity of World Cup football is on another level but expressed confidence that Bafana can rise to the occasion against the Asian side.

“To talk about the intensity, I think everybody knows that the World Cup is the biggest stage in football, so the intensity here is very high,” said Sithole.

“Obviously, we are playing against a very good side. We know their qualities and we know how they play because we have analysed them. As the coach has said, the only thing we need to do on Thursday morning is win the game if we want to qualify.

“I think we are more than motivated for that, and we just can’t wait for tomorrow.”

Sithole also reflected on his difficult outing against Mexico, admitting that he did not perform to the level he expected. However, he praised his teammates and coaching staff for the support they showed him in the aftermath.

“Well, I know that I did not have a good game in the first match, but I think the response I got from the team was very good,” he said.

“Everyone was supportive, including the coach. He supported me very well, and I am very grateful for that.

“That is what makes us a very good team. Beyond being teammates, we have very good human beings in this group, and that support has helped me a lot.”
