“I’m Pained By It”: Morena On Injury Heartbreak And Bafana’s World Cup Exit

Versatile defender Thapelo Morena has praised Bafana Bafana’s historic FIFA World Cup campaign, saying the players gave everything for the badge despite their heartbreaking Round of 32 exit to co-hosts Canada in Los Angeles.

Although Morena was not part of Hugo Broos’ final squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after failing a late fitness test, the Mamelodi Sundowns star has been a key member of the national team since Broos took charge.

A knee injury sustained during a match against Kaizer Chiefs in early May ruled him out of the CAF Champions League final and ultimately denied him the opportunity to represent South Africa at the global showpiece.

Despite his absence, Morena closely followed Bafana Bafana’s memorable campaign, which saw the team make history by becoming the first South African senior men’s national team to reach the knockout stages of the FIFA World Cup.

Bafana advanced from Group A after recording one win, one draw and one defeat, with their only group-stage loss coming against fellow co-hosts Mexico in the tournament opener.

Reflecting on the team’s performance, Morena said the players deserved immense credit for their commitment throughout the tournament.

“It’s true, they had a remarkable journey. The guys gave everything on the pitch, from the first game to Sunday against Canada,” Morena said.

“I would never say the players didn’t do their best. Just like how we’re feeling now, everyone in South Africa is feeling the same pain that we’re feeling.

“I want to speak more as a supporter and also as a player who has been there before. I’m pained by it.

“I’ve been on the pitch, so I know and understand what it feels like. Every player who steps onto that field wants to give everything and leave everything on the pitch.”

Morena believes Bafana’s inability to convert their chances was ultimately the decisive factor in their elimination.

“One thing that pains me is that we played well but didn’t take the opportunity to put the ball in the back of the net. It’s something we’ve also been lacking, especially in the PSL,” he added.

“We create a lot of chances, but we don’t convert them. I think that’s something we need to improve, starting from the grassroots.

“To be honest, the guys played well, and it’s painful as a footballer to get to where you are and not achieve what you wanted. Football is 50-50. Sometimes you don’t play well and you win, and you celebrate. Other times you play very well and still don’t win, and that hurts.

“Putting your body on the line, showing dedication, discipline and giving everything for the nation and the jersey you’re wearing, while respecting what it represents, is a big thing.

“For me, they won the hearts of many people because of the performances they produced throughout the tournament.”
