“He Did Everything In South Africa” — Sebelebele Backs Mofokeng’s Move
Orlando Pirates defender Kamogelo Sebelebele believes Relebohile Mofokeng has taken the right step in his career by joining Union Saint-Gilloise and is confident the move will eventually pave the way to either the English Premier League or Spain’s LaLiga.
Mofokeng recently completed a four-year move to Belgian Pro League side Union Saint-Gilloise, bringing an end to a trophy-laden spell with the Buccaneers, where he established himself as one of South Africa’s brightest young talents.
Sebelebele, who played alongside Mofokeng at Pirates last season and is also his teammate in the Bafana Bafana squad that recently exited the FIFA World Cup in the Round of 32 after losing to Canada, believes the winger has earned the opportunity to showcase his talent on the European stage.
The pair have also been recognised for their outstanding campaigns after both receiving nominations for the PSL Players’ Player of the Season award.
Speaking about Mofokeng’s transfer, Sebelebele said the 21-year-old had achieved everything he could in South African football and deserved the chance to test himself abroad.
“He really deserves this, and no one deserves it more than him,” Sebelebele said.
“The guy did everything in South Africa, and now he must go there for a new challenge and show the world his talent. I’m very happy for him. He really deserves it, and I’m sure he will show them his best.
“I think in one or two seasons he will move to England or Spain. I think he deserves to play in those countries.”
Mofokeng leaves Pirates after enjoying one of the most successful spells by a young player in the club’s history. He helped the Buccaneers win seven major trophies, including three MTN8 titles, two Nedbank Cups, the Carling Knockout and the Betway Premiership.
The reigning Betway Premiership Young Player of the Season played a key role in Pirates’ memorable 2025/26 campaign, helping the club complete a domestic treble by winning the Betway Premiership, MTN8 and Carling Knockout while ending a 14-year wait to be crowned league champions.
He also departs with an impressive individual record, having made 125 appearances in all competitions for Pirates, scoring 29 goals and providing 31 assists.
