Zwane Backs Ngwenya For Betway Premiership Golden Boot

AmaZulu coach Arthur Zwane believes Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya can challenge for the top goalscorer award at the end of the 2026/27 season after the 23-year-old scored twice in their 5-2 Betway Premiership defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Wednesday.

The brace took Ngwenya’s tally to seven goals in five games across all competitions, with five goals coming in the league and two in the MTN8.

Zwane believes Ngwenya has the potential to challenge for the Golden Boot by the end of the season, a feat he could have achieved last term had an injury not sidelined him for around two and a half months.

“Look, there’s no doubt about it,” said Zwane.

“Even last season, if you check, if he did not get the injury, I think he was going to help us big time. Unfortunately, he missed about two and a half months of the season when we needed him the most.

“He was already on six goals, and he also had a lot of one-on-ones earlier on in the season where he did not take those chances. I even said to them last season, before he got injured, he could have easily been on 12, if not 14 already.”

Zwane, however, stressed that while Ngwenya’s goalscoring form is encouraging, other players must also take responsibility in front of goal.

“It’s good to see him scoring goals. The only worrying factor is that it can’t be only him who scores for us,” said Zwane.

“Others also have to take responsibility. You can’t rely on him because, should he get injured again, then we’re going to have a problem. So, we’re just hoping that he’ll be available for selection.

“You must have seen towards the end of the game he started cramping, and that was a worrying factor from our side.”
