“It Is A Worrying Factor” — Zwane Sounds Warning Over Ngwenya’s Goal Dependency

AmaZulu head coach Arthur Zwane admits that relying almost exclusively on striker Thando Ngwenya for goals is becoming a major concern.

Ngwenya has dominated headlines for Usuthu, leading the attack with nine goals in seven matches across all competitions. Seven of those strikes have come in the league, meaning he has scored in every single Betway Premiership fixture AmaZulu have played this season.

His explosive form earned him the Betway Premiership Player of the Month award after netting five goals in four matches early September, pushing the Durban side up to third on the table.

As Ngwenya is having his nose bleed in front of the goals after he flung his face at the back post as they beat Marumo Gallants this past weekend, the only other two players who have scored goals are Nkosikhona Radebe and Mlondi Mbanjwa.

Interestingly, it was Radebe who clipped the ball at the back post for Ngwenya to score at the bottom side in KwaMashu.    

“It is a worrying factor,” said Zwane regarding the lack of alternative goalscorers.

“Before we even talk about the goals, we have to look at individual performances. When you face an opposition that is ready to defend and put their bodies on the line, you are going to face challenges if those clear-cut opportunities don’t come easy.”

Reflecting on their performance against Gallants, Zwane added: “We had moments where we got the ball into the red zones and had chances to capitalise, but we were too hasty for no reason. It came down to poor decision-making.”

Usuthu have accumulated 13 points from six matches (four wins, one draw, one loss), putting them level on points with second-placed Orlando Pirates.

Zwane’s men travel to face Polokwane City at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday, with kick-off scheduled for 17:30.
