‘The City Is Ready’: Mayor Xaba Promises High-Impact MTN8 Final In Durban
eThekwini Municipality Mayor Councillor Cyril Xaba has welcomed the Premier Soccer League’s (PSL) decision to stage the 2026 MTN8 Final between Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday, 10 October 2026.
Speaking at a media briefing held at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Tuesday, Mayor Xaba said the decision reflects the venue’s established track record of hosting major football fixtures and its contribution to positioning eThekwini as a destination for major sporting events.
Building on this experience, the City is confident in its readiness to host the upcoming final.
“The City is ready to host the 2026 MTN8 Final at Moses Mabhida Stadium. We are working closely with the PSL, stadium management, law enforcement, emergency services and other relevant stakeholders to ensure that the necessary arrangements are in place for match day,” said Mayor Xaba.
He said the final is expected to attract supporters and visitors from across the country, creating opportunities for local businesses, traders, SMMEs, hospitality establishments, transport operators and creative practitioners.
Mayor Xaba also highlighted the broader tourism and economic opportunities associated with hosting major sporting events, noting that visitors will have an opportunity to experience eThekwini’s tourism attractions, beaches, restaurants and hospitality offerings.
“Moses Mabhida Stadium is more than a stadium. It is a landmark that has become part of the City’s identity and a venue that continues to attract major sporting events to eThekwini. We look forward to an exciting final on 10 October and to welcoming football supporters to our City,” said Mayor Xaba.
The Mayor encouraged supporters travelling to eThekwini for the final to plan their journeys in advance, make use of public transport where possible, and follow the instructions of officials to ensure a safe and enjoyable match-day experience.
The City is continuing to work with the PSL, stadium management and relevant stakeholders to ensure that operational arrangements are coordinated and responsive to the anticipated influx of supporters and visitors.
