“A Quiet Machine”: Komphela Shares Emotional Tribute At Adams

Mamelodi Sundowns assistant coach Steve Komphela has paid an emotional tribute to the late Jayden Adams, describing the midfielder as a humble, soft-spoken individual whose quiet presence and remarkable football ability will be deeply missed.

Adams tragically passed away over the weekend after returning from the 2026 FIFA Club World Cup with the Bafana Bafana side that reached the knockout stages for the first time. He was 25.

The Bafana Bafana international joined the Brazilians from Stellenbosch FC during the second half of the 2024/25 season and quickly established himself as an important member of Miguel Cardoso’s squad, helping the club win both the Betway Premiership title and the CAF Champions League last season.

As the club continues to mourn his passing, Sundowns have postponed their planned pre-season trip to Austria to allow players and staff time to grieve ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.

Reflecting on Adams’ character, Komphela described him as a calm and thoughtful person whose actions always spoke louder than his words.

“Jayden was a forgiving person. He was quiet and didn’t speak much, but he was a very good player, and we all know that,” Komphela said.

“When you sat with him, you could feel that you were with someone who had a clear mind. Even though he didn’t say much, whenever he spoke, his words carried meaning. You could easily understand what he wanted to say. We are going to miss him.”

Komphela also reflected on the global recognition Adams received following his passing, saying the moments of silence observed during the FIFA World Cup illustrated the lasting impact the midfielder had made.

“He made a great impact at the club, but what stood out even more was what we saw at the World Cup,” Komphela said.

“I remember watching England play against Norway, and there was a moment of silence for Jayden Adams. That moment touched my heart. It showed that his impact went far beyond his family, Mamelodi Sundowns and football fans in South Africa. His influence reached people around the world.”

The former Kaizer Chiefs coach said Adams would be remembered not only for his football ability but also for the quiet dignity he carried throughout his life.

“What we will miss most is his quiet nature,” Komphela added.

“Jayden could sit next to you without saying a word, but when he did speak, you knew his words mattered.

“We will also miss the way he played. He was a quiet machine on the field. He never needed to make noise because his football spoke for him. Sometimes you would hardly notice him, but once he became involved in the game, you could clearly see his quality.”

Komphela concluded by saying Adams’ legacy would live on through the memories he created at Sundowns and the example he set with his humility, professionalism and dedication to the game.
