Adams’ Late Goal Sends Sundowns To Nedbank Cup Semi-Finals Against Chiefs

Jayden Adams’ late goal secured Mamelodi Sundowns’ victory over a resilient Sekhukhune United in the Nedbank Cup quarter-final at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Friday.

Sundowns will now face Kaizer Chiefs in the semi-final, with the PSL set to confirm dates and venues.

Sundowns had to work hard for their victory, with Adams scoring in the 119th minute after they had relentlessly attacked Sekhukhune’s goal throughout the match. Based on their overall performance, Sundowns deserved the win, having dominated from start to finish.

This was a productive week for Adams, who also scored twice in Bafana Bafana’s recent 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Benin.

Both Sundowns and Sekhukhune started the match with high intensity. In the 19th minute, Shaune Mogaila appeared to score for the visitors, but the referee, Skhumbuzo Gasa, disallowed the goal, citing a foul on Lucas Suarez.

Sekhukhune controlled much of the subsequent play, with Mogaila’s threat on the right flank causing problems for Sundowns. In the 26th minute, Mogaila delivered a dangerous cross, but it failed to find a teammate.

Eric Tinkler’s side continued to press for the opening goal, with Keletso Makgalwa’s 36th-minute free-kick forcing a fine save from Ronwen Williams.

Ten minutes later, Grant Kekana almost scored with a header, but Renaldo Leaner made an excellent save to deny Sundowns.

The second half began with both teams displaying renewed vigor. Makgalwa had another chance in the 53rd minute, but Sundowns’ defense held firm.

Shortly after, Arthur Sales forced another impressive save from Leaner.

Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso then introduced Teboho Mokoena, Lucas Ribeiro Costa, and Peter Shalulile in the 65th minute, replacing Neo Maema, Matias Esquivel, and Iqraam Rayners.

In the 83rd minute, Sales squandered another opportunity, shooting over the bar after a good pass from Ribeiro. Leaner then denied Kekana again in the 87th minute.

Sundowns could have won the game in regulation time, but Leaner made another crucial save from Ribeiro’s free-kick. Shalulile subsequently scored, but the assistant referee ruled it offside.

In the first half of extra time, Sundowns created numerous chances, but Leaner continued to frustrate them with a series of saves.

Finally, in the second half of extra time, Adams broke the deadlock, sending Sundowns through to face Chiefs in the Nedbank Cup semi-final.
