Amajita Takes Giant Leap Towards World Cup Dream

In a thrilling encounter at the 30 June Stadium in Cairo, Amajita secured a crucial 1-1 draw against Zambia, booking their spot in the quarterfinals of the AFCON U20.

The match was a high-intensity affair, with both teams creating scoring opportunities from the outset.

Zambia had the first chance in the 2nd minute, but Amajita goalkeeper Fletcher Lowe made a spectacular save to deny them the opening goal.

Amajita struck first in the 8th minute through a beautifully crafted goal by Kutlwano Letlhaku, who capitalized on a fine pass from Mfundo Vilakazi.

However, Zambia’s relentless pressure paid off just three minutes later, as Bonephanseo Phiri scored the equalizer.

Despite conceding, Amajita continued to play attractive football, with Langelihle Phili hitting the post in the 15th minute. The first half ended 1-1, with both teams having numerous chances.

Coach Raymond Mdaka made a tactical substitution at halftime, introducing captain Patrick Autata in place of Letlhaku to bolster the midfield.

The move had an immediate impact, as Amajita created several scoring opportunities in the first 10 minutes of the second half. Unfortunately, they failed to capitalize on these chances.

As the game lost momentum, Mdaka introduced Shakeel April, Thabang Mahlangu, and Thato Sibiya, resting Vilakazi, Jody Ahshene, and Phili.

The new trio injected fresh energy into Amajita’s attack, creating more scoring opportunities, but they couldn’t find the winning goal. The match ended 1-1, with both goals coming in the first half.

Despite the draw, Amajita finished top of Group A with seven points, level with Sierra Leone and Egypt.

The team’s next challenge will be against DR Congo in the quarterfinals on Monday.

A victory against Congo will not only see them progress to the semifinals but also secure a spot in the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile.

The stakes are high, but Amajita’s determination and skill will be put to the test as they chase their World Cup dream.
