Arrows Complete A League Double Over Chiefs

Golden Arrows achieved a historic victory over Kaizer Chiefs at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday, securing their first win at the venue and completing a league double over the Amakhosi this season.

Knox Mutizwa sealed the victory in the 78th minute, capitalizing on a fumble by Chiefs’ goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma from a cross, leaving him with an easy finish.

The defeat significantly damages Chiefs’ hopes of finishing in the top eight, while Arrows’ win solidifies their 10th position in the Betway Premiership table with 27 points from 20 matches.

Prior to this match, Arrows had never defeated Chiefs at Moses Mabhida Stadium in their league match, Chiefs’ alternative home venue.

They had previously secured victories against Chiefs at the other ground, Princess Magogo Stadium in KwaMashu, but not at the 2010 FIFA World Cup semi-final venue.

Chiefs began the match as the stronger side.

Arrows’ left-back Thokozani Lukhele conceded a penalty in the 10th minute, tripping Glody Lilepo inside the box. However, Yusuf Maart’s casual penalty attempt struck the post, allowing Arrows to escape an early setback.

Fans quickly turned on Maart, booing him every time he touched the ball, reflecting his declining popularity among the supporters.

Chiefs nearly conceded when Edmilson Dove’s attempted back pass was intercepted by Angelo van Rooi. However, Inacio Miguel intervened, preventing a clear scoring opportunity.

Velemseni Ndwandwe and Nduduzo Sibiya executed a neat one-two, but Sibiya’s indecisiveness resulted in the ball sailing over the bar.

Chiefs’ defense appeared shaky, and Sibiya squandered a golden opportunity in the 20th minute, failing to connect with van Rooi’s dangerous cross from close range.

Arrows looked threatening on the counter-attack, despite Chiefs’ dominance in possession.

Arrows deservedly took the lead when Mutizwa outmuscled Miguel, setting up Sibiya for an easy tap-in in the 25th minute.

However, Maart redeemed himself a minute later, atoning for his penalty miss with an equalizer.

Gaston Sirino’s defense-splitting pass created an opening, and Maart finished calmly, slotting the ball through Edward Maova’s legs.

Chiefs should have taken the lead before halftime, but Dillan Solomons squandered a clear chance in front of goal, dragging his shot wide.

In the 52nd minute, van Rooi missed a golden opportunity to score, firing wide with only Bvuma to beat.

Arrows dominated the second half, posing numerous problems for a lackluster Chiefs side.

Their pressure paid off when Siyanda Mthanti beat Dove on the right and delivered a pinpoint cross. Bvuma’s save fell to Mutizwa, who headed home the decisive goal.

Arrows nearly added a third goal, but Ndwandwe’s poor decision-making inside the box resulted in a tame cross straight into Bvuma’s hands.

Ultimately, Arrows secured a deserved victory, completing a league double over Kaizer Chiefs.
