Bafana Bafana Striker Joins Algerian Giants

South African international striker Khanyisa Mayo has joined Algerian giants CR Belouizdad from Cape Town City.

Mayo and agent, Basia Michael, flew to North Africa this week to finalize the move.

The 25-year-old has signed a three-year contract with Belouizdad, who finished as runners-up in the Algerian league last season and will feature in the CAF Champions League this coming season. Reports suggest that Belouizdad fended off competition from clubs like Club Brugge and Raja Casablanca to secure Mayo’s signature, making him the first South African to join the North African club.

Mayo, who spent three years at City, shared the PSL Golden Shoe with Mamelodi Sundowns’ Peter Shalulile in the 2022/23 season. At the beginning of last season, City awarded him the number 10 jersey, highlighting his importance to the club. He scored 11 goals in 31 matches across all competitions last term.

In total, Mayo made 93 appearances for City, scoring 29 goals and providing six assists. He joins Elias Mokwana at Esperance (Tunisia) and Percy Tau at Al Ahly (Egypt) and Fagrie Lakay at Pyramids (Egypt) as South African players making their mark in North African football.
