Bafana Bafana To Host South Sudan In Cape Town

The Bafana Bafana’s upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against South Sudan will be hosted at DHL Stadium in Cape Town.

The South African Football Association (SAFA) has officially submitted this venue to the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

Interestingly, the last time Bafana Bafana suffered a defeat in an AFCON qualifier at home was in September 2007 against Zambia at Newlands Stadium in Cape Town.

Since then it has been 19 matches and 17 years at home where they have not suffered a defeat since former Jomo Cosmos striker Christ Katongo scored one of the quickest hat-tricks for Chipolopolo on the day as Carlos Alberto Perreira’s side was pulled apart to lose 3-1.  

With a win against either Uganda or South Sudan, Bafana Bafana will secure their qualification for the 2025 AFCON in Morocco. While they had the opportunity to seal their spot earlier in the campaign, a draw against Congo in the return leg prevented them from doing so.

Currently, Bafana Bafana sit second in Group K with eight points, two points behind group leaders Uganda. Congo is in third place with four points, while Sudan is bottom of the group with no points.

Hugo Broos announced a preliminary squad for the upcoming qualifiers on Tuesday, which will be trimmed down to a final 23-man selection in the coming weeks.
