Bafana Catch Massive Experience Boost As FIFA Names World Cup Opening Match Referee

MEXICO CITY — FIFA has appointed Brazilian referee Wilton Pereira Sampaio to officiate Bafana Bafana’s highly anticipated 2026 FIFA World Cup opening match against tournament co-hosts Mexico at the Estadio Azteca on Thursday.

The 44-year-old Sampaio will lead an all-Brazilian officiating crew. Compatriots Bruno Pires and Bruno Boschilia will assist him on the lines for the curtain-raiser.

Sampaio brings immense top-tier experience to the tournament opener. This season alone, the veteran official oversaw matches across the Copa Libertadores, Copa Sudamericana, and the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A, alongside a high-profile invitation to referee in the UAE Pro League.

The blockbuster clash marks the second time South Africa will feature in a FIFA World Cup opening match. Bafana Bafana famously kicked off the 2010 tournament against Mexico on home soil—a memorable encounter that ended in a 1-1 draw.

Hugo Broos’ side will also chase history on Thursday as they look to defeat the North American giants for the first time. Notably, all of South Africa’s historical World Cup match victories to date have come strictly against European opposition.

Following the battle in Mexico City, Bafana Bafana will travel to face the Czech Republic on 18 June, before wrapping up their Group A campaign against South Korea on 25 June.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup, to be co-hosted in the USA, Canada, and Mexico, will run from 11 June until 19 July.
