Barker: I’m In Awe Of My Players

Stellenbosch FC coach Steve Barker feels his team isn’t getting the recognition they deserve after a dominant 4-0 thrashing of SuperSport United at Danie Craven Stadium on Saturday.

This victory secures their place in the Nedbank Cup semifinals for the second consecutive year.

Stellies completely dominated the encounter, leaving Gavin Hunt’s SuperSport bewildered by the relentless attacks and flurry of goals.

This win extends their unbeaten run to a record 21 matches across all competitions. Notably, they secured their first-ever trophy, the Carling Knockout Cup, late last year.

“Considering the caliber of players SuperSport have, their experience and quality, the performance we delivered today deserves more credit,” said Barker, who unfortunately lost this very cup in 2009 while managing Tuks against Moroka Swallows.

“We scored four goals, conceded none, and remain unbeaten in 21 games – that’s 16 wins, 40 goals scored, and only 10 conceded. This team deserves to be back in the semifinals, making it four in a row. I’m incredibly proud of them.”

Barker believes this match signifies a turning point for Stellenbosch. “This team has matured considerably since I arrived,” he remarked. “We displayed not just fighting spirit but also quality on the ball. The talent we witnessed today was truly awe-inspiring.”

Adding to their impressive form, Stellenbosch currently sits second in the DStv Premiership table with 39 points after 22 matches.

While they trail Mamelodi Sundowns by 13 points, Sundowns has two games in hand. Interestingly, the last time Stellenbosch lost a match was against Sundowns themselves back in September.
