Bay Chairman Blasts Truter For Failure

Richards Bay chairman Sifiso Biyela has responded sharply to former coach Brandon Truter’s criticism of the club’s management and coaching structure.

Truter, who parted ways with the club following a disappointing 2-1 loss to Kaizer Chiefs, blamed the club’s recurring issues on a lack of mental toughness and a consistent coaching structure. He suggested that while the club may frequently change coaches, the underlying problems remain unresolved.

“Look, we’re not a bad team at all. I think it’s more mental, in terms of the mental toughness, in terms of where we find ourselves and the will to win,” said Truter after Chiefs loss.

“We were so cautious, so reluctant at times to actually go out and attack Chiefs in the first half. But we sat back and hoping to get on the counter. Once you play like that, the fear of losing is greater than the [will] to win.

“And that’s what we’re lacking at the moment. With the results like that, it becomes a mental block. It becomes another obstacle that you have to overcome.

“Never mind the opponent or what they present or the environment. But these are things that are not in football. It’s outside football.

“So, you have to look at that. How can we help the player? It’s not the first time Richards Bay has been in this situation. It’s been two seasons ongoing now.

“You can change plenty of coaches, but if you don’t solve the problem, you’ll always stay there. And I think that’s the issue at this moment.”

However, Biyela dismissed Truter’s claims, suggesting that the coach’s struggles are not specific to Bay. He pointed to Truter’s previous stints at clubs like AmaZulu, Royal AM, Sekhukhune United, and Moroka Swallows, where he also faced challenges.

“If he is complaining, nothing we can do,” Biyela told Sportswire. “We understand when someone has a problem, he always looks for a scapegoat. We didn’t work with him when he was failing at AmaZulu. Did we work with him when Royal AM, Sekhukhune United, and Moroka Swallows? Why didn’t it work for him there?”

Biyela also questioned Truter’s ability to sustain success beyond the first season, suggesting that the coach often struggles to maintain momentum in subsequent campaigns.

“If it’s second season, that means he found the team in good space in the first season and he carry that moment. But when he was starting his team, he fails,” said Biyela.

“There is nothing we can do now. We have scored two goals in eight games. There is nothing we can do. It is just to have a hope.”

In the immediate aftermath of Truter’s departure, assistant coaches Siboniso Gumede, Ronnie Gabriel, and Sibusiso Msomi will take charge of the team. Richards Bay will face AmaZulu at King Zwelithini Stadium on Saturday.

“The assistant coaches that are there will be in charge of the team,” confirmed Biyela.

“Siboniso Gumede, Ronnie Gabriel, and Sibusiso Msomi will be in charge as coaches. It is more like AmaZulu where the coaches are co-coaching. We are going to do that; we are in no rush.”
