Bayern Munich’s Nightmare Referee Handed Bafana’s Historic World Cup Knockout Match

FIFA has appointed controversial Portuguese referee João Pinheiro to officiate South Africa’s FIFA World Cup Round of 32 clash against Canada at Los Angeles Stadium on Sunday.

Pinheiro, 38, has been a regular official in the UEFA Champions League this past season. However, he came under heavy criticism from Bayern Munich following his controversial performance during the 2026 UEFA Champions League semifinal against Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), which the German giants ultimately lost.

He mistakenly penalized Bayern’s Konrad Laimer for handball instead of showing PSG defender Nuno Mendes a second yellow card, sparking fury from Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen, who openly questioned Pinheiro’s big-match experience.

His appointment continues a trend of experienced yet controversial referees taking charge of Bafana Bafana’s matches.

South Africa’s final Group A fixture against South Korea was officiated by Argentine referee Facundo Tello, who made global headlines after issuing 10 red cards during the 2022 Argentine Champions Trophy final—one of the most extraordinary disciplinary records in football history.

Pinheiro will be assisted by fellow Portuguese officials Bruno Jesus and Luciano Maia as the first and second assistant referees, respectively.

Referees Omar Alali and Mohamed Alhammadi of the United Arab Emirates have been appointed as the fourth official and reserve assistant referee.

Pinheiro has been handed what promises to be one of the most fiercely contested fixtures of the tournament, with both South Africa and Canada chasing history.

The two nations have reached the FIFA World Cup knockout stage for the first time in their respective histories and will be determined to extend their remarkable campaigns by advancing to the Round of 16.

Both teams finished second in their respective groups on four points after recording one win, one draw, and one defeat during the group stage.

Bafana Bafana will also face their second co-host nation of the tournament, having already suffered a defeat to Mexico in the opening match.

With a place in the Round of 16 at stake, Sunday’s encounter is expected to be fiercely contested, placing even greater scrutiny on Pinheiro and his officiating team.

This is only the second time South Africa and Canada have ever met in men’s international football. Bafana Bafana won their sole previous encounter 2-0 in a 2007 friendly, making Sunday their first-ever competitive fixture.
