“Being Worried? No” — Gabriel Sends Defiant Message To Big Clubs Chasing Bay Stars

Richards Bay co-coach Ronnie Gabriel says he is not concerned about bigger clubs targeting his talented young players during the off-season, as happened last year.

Bay, who are almost mathematically safe from relegation, lost Yanela Mbuthuma and Nkosikhona Ndaba to Orlando Pirates during the previous off-season.

This followed a historic campaign in which the club finished in the top eight for the first time, securing the achievement with a win over SuperSport United in their final match of last season.

A similar situation could arise again, with several players impressing this term. Captain Simphiwe Mcineka has enjoyed a standout season, alongside Thulani Gumede and Lindokuhle Zikhali.

Another player who has come into his own is Moses Mthembu, who has been reliable from the penalty spot whenever called upon.

Gabriel believes Zikhali deserves to be among the nominees for the PSL Young Player of the Season award, insisting the 21-year-old can compete with anyone.

The midfielder has been outstanding for the KwaZulu-Natal side, making 29 appearances across all competitions and scoring two goals.

Gumede, who suffered a foot injury early in the season, has also made a significant impact, contributing two goals and two assists in 17 matches.

These performances have helped Bay climb to 10th place in the Betway Premiership standings with 31 points from 26 matches, just four points behind eighth-placed Golden Arrows.

“Yes, we’ve had some standout performances this season,” Gabriel said.

“There has been clear progress within the group, and players are improving in leaps and bounds. It’s normal for them to attract interest from bigger clubs.

“But for now, we’re happy to have them, and long may that continue.

“Am I worried? No.”

Additionally, Bay have proven difficult to beat at home this season, losing only once at the Umhlathuze Sports Complex—an advantage that has supported their progress. Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates, and Mamelodi Sundowns have all dropped points in Richards Bay.

The Natal Rich Boys return to action on Tuesday when they host Polokwane City at the Umhlathuze Sports Complex.
