Bern Takes Spurs To PSL DRC To Be Declared Free

Sportswire has learned that Liam Bern has finally taken his case against Cape Town Spurs to the Premier Soccer League’s (PSL) Dispute Resolution Chamber (DRC).

This action follows a similar path taken by former teammates Asanele Velebayi and Luke Baartman.

AmaZulu, who signed Bern during the off-season, has not yet registered him with the PSL. This is because Spurs claim they are still owed a transfer fee for the player, despite the club being relegated to the ABC Motsepe Regional League at the end of last season.

Spurs also sought transfer fees for Velebayi and Baartman, but both players won their cases at the DRC, which allowed them to be signed by Kaizer Chiefs.

However, Chiefs cannot field the players at the moment because Spurs have appealed the DRC’s ruling and have taken the matter to a South African Football Association (SAFA) arbitration with the hope of a more favorable outcome.

It is expected that the DRC will rule in Bern’s favor, based on PSL rules that state players are considered free agents if they are not playing in one of the top two leagues – the Betway Premiership and Motsepe Foundation Championship.

By taking the case to the DRC, AmaZulu aims to officially declare Bern a free agent so they can register him. However, if Spurs lose the case, they will still have the right to appeal the decision at SAFA arbitration, just like they did with Velebayi and Baartman.
